Do you have ideas swirling in your head, but every time you sit down to write, there's nothing but static? You stare at the blank screen or that empty page, and all those brilliant thoughts buzzing around earlier vanish, replaced by to-do lists, worry, or maybe just plain old self-doubt.
Life has a way of throwing everything but the kitchen sink in our paths when all we want is a moment of silence to tap into our creativity. Finding clarity can feel impossible between juggling responsibilities, a day job, family, and maybe even just figuring out what's for dinner.
Let’s break through some barriers and get your words flowing. Here are three simple ways to shake off writer’s block and get back to telling your story.
1. Create a Ritual
Think of this as your creative "on switch." A simple ritual that tells your brain, "Hey, it's time to write!" could be the key to unlocking the door to creativity. Whether it's lighting a candle, making a cup of tea, or taking five deep breaths, find something that feels like a pause in your day, a little moment to center yourself.
It doesn't have to be fancy, just consistent. When you do this ritual, your brain starts associating it with writing time. Suddenly, the words surface.
Helpful Hint: Dedicate a specific space to write, even if it's a corner of your couch. Having a designated space can help your brain "recognize" that this is where the magic happens.
2. Free Write Like No One's Watching
We often get stuck because we think our writing has to be perfect from the start. I have clients who stress themselves out and refuse to write until they have come up with a title and names for all their chapters! Can I let you in on a little secret? No one writes a masterpiece on their first draft. Get those messy, fragmented, imperfect thoughts out of your head by free writing. Set a timer for 10-15 minutes and just write. Don't worry about grammar, structure, or if it even makes sense; just get the words flowing. The goal is to break down the walls of resistance and let your mind run free.
Once the words start pouring out, you'll often find they lead you right where you need to go, and those fifteen minutes have turned into an hour.
3. Write in Small Bursts
If you're waiting for that perfect two-hour block to write, you might be waiting forever. Life is busy, so stop expecting long, uninterrupted writing sessions. Instead, grab small chunks of time—15 minutes before bed, 10 minutes while your coffee's brewing, or a quick note on your phone while you're waiting in line.
Small, consistent writing bursts add up, and you'll have pages of content before you know it. Plus, by sneaking in these mini-writing sessions, you'll keep the ideas fresh and the momentum going, even on your busiest days.
As a business owner, partner in multiple ventures with my hubby, homeschooling mom, and the ultimate household manager, I also find it tough to write at times. That's why I've become obsessed with the Notes app on my phone. Anytime an idea or concept pops into my head, I jot it down on the spot. Later, when I have a moment, I will expand on the thought. There's only so much we can mentally juggle before those great ideas start slipping away, so capture them as they come. Trust me, you'll come back to them and keep the momentum going!
